The first ARTEMIS Summer School 2026, an intensive programme dedicated to Reactive Heritage Digital Twins (RHDT) and their application in cultural heritage preservation has concluded in Hof (Germany). Over the course of several days, participants from various countries worked at Hof University of Applied Sciences on practical case studies, explored tools for digital and reactive twins, and engaged with risk‑modelling techniques and approaches for monitoring the condition of heritage assets.

The programme combined lectures by European researchers, workshops and networking sessions, focusing on how digital twins can assist with the conservation, restoration and management of cultural heritage — from individual artefacts to historic buildings and landscapes. The summer school formed part of the wider ARTEMIS project, which is developing digital tools to protect cultural heritage with EU support under the Horizon Europe programme.

In the lead-up to the ARTEMIS Summer School 2026, the ARTEMIS Second Interim Meeting took place, in which the Pixelated Realities PO was represented by its Head, Iana Boitsova, and educational projects coordinator Yulia Frolova, who presented Ukraine’s experience of digitally documenting heritage in wartime.

Our colleagues joined the international community of digital heritage specialists. ARTEMIS, recognised as the European Commission’s ‘Project of the Month’ for June, focuses on the concept of ‘Reactive Heritage Digital Twins’ — reactive digital twins of real objects that help analyse risks and plan for their preservation. Their participation strengthens Ukraine’s voice in the European debate on the future of digital heritage twins and long-term digital infrastructure for working with cultural heritage sites.

The ARTEMIS Consortium, in which PO Pixelated Realities is a partner, gathered in the historic city of Lecce, Italy, for its Interim Plenary Meeting on June 19th and 20th, marking a significant step forward for this major European research initiative. Hosted just a few months after the project’s official launch in February, the event brought together project partners, technical specialists, and cultural heritage experts from across Europe to evaluate progress and strategize for the months ahead.

Representatives from Pixelated Realities and fellow partners joined coordinators Franco Niccolucci (Scientific Coordinator) and Luca Pezzati (Project Coordinator) as they set a collaborative tone and reported on progress. “At month six, we are not only on track, but ahead of schedule,” Franco Niccolucci told the assembled participants, affirming ARTEMIS’s pace.

Among the highlights was groundbreaking work in Artificial Intelligence, researchers demonstrated new AI approaches capable of automatically scanning texts and extracting structured annotations compatible with international ontologies. This innovation enables the rapid creation of rich metadata for digitized documents, offering a transformative tool for scholars and cultural heritage professionals by dramatically reducing manual workload and accelerating access to research outputs.

“By participating in the ARTEMIS consortium, our team has an opportunity to exchange valuable experience with consortium partners. The meeting in Lecce once again emphasised that only joint work, openness to innovation and international cooperation allow us to create truly breakthrough solutions.

I am convinced that applying Reactive Digital Twins methodology for cultural heritage, especially endangered by war, climate change, and natural disasters, opens up new horizons for research and the preservation of history.

The core of the meeting centered on technical updates: teams presented on the ongoing setup of the project’s digital infrastructure and discussed implementation of diverse services designed to support ARTEMIS’s unique mission. Of the 33 candidate pilot studies originally shortlisted, a refined selection process has now focused efforts on 26 promising pilots, ensuring methodological rigor and alignment with the project’s overarching criteria. 

The ARTEMIS team is making significant investments in training and outreach initiatives to ensure broad accessibility and engagement. The first summer school is scheduled for June 2026, which will mark the beginning of an extensive educational program. To meet the needs of various audiences, a range of delivery methods will be employed, including online guides, interactive workshops, and specialized seminars, all tailored to suit the specific requirements of different end users. The approach will be flexible and adaptable, ensuring maximum impact and accessibility across diverse sectors.

Pixelated Realities is pleased to announce that we have become the partner in the ARTEMIS project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon program. 

ARTEMIS is developing a cutting-edge digital infrastructure to revolutionize cultural heritage conservation and restoration. At its core is the Reactive Heritage Digital Twin (RHDT), a dynamic digital replica of real objects that will play a crucial role in European research infrastructures.

By joining this international consortium, Pixelated Realities contributes its expertise in digitization and 3D modelling to help preserve cultural heritage endangered by russian war against Ukraine. This participation allows the organization to innovate in studying, restoring, and promoting cultural values, ensuring their accessibility for future generations.

ARTEMIS will integrate data management, providing researchers and professionals with access to a vast repository of over four million scientific and technical reports, alongside advanced visualization and simulation techniques. This will enable virtual restoration experiments, allowing experts to test restoration strategies without physically altering heritage assets. While the project primarily targets the scientific and professional community, its ability to simulate and visualize restoration outcomes will also be invaluable for decision-makers to evaluate restoration strategies in advance. Ultimately, the general public will benefit from cost reductions and enhanced heritage preservation, ensuring the transmission of cultural treasures to future generations.

The project brings together 22 partners from 12 EU countries, along with two major restoration centres as affiliates. ARTEMIS is led by CNR-INO, an institute of the Italian National Research Council working on optical heritage diagnostics for more than 40 years.
