Kherson

O

n February 24, 2022, the battles for Kherson began after the russian federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The offensive of the Russian occupying forces on Kherson unfolded from the south, from the direction of the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula.

On March 1, they broke through to the regional center with the help of armored vehicles. On March 2, the city was occupied, after which preparations began for a pseudo-referendum to create a puppet entity or join the Russian Federation, which took place illegally on September 30.

On November 11, Ukrainian troops entered the city and during the day the city was finally liberated. In preparation for the escape, the occupiers looted the Kherson Art Museum and the Kherson Local History Museum, the zoo, and communal property.

After the liberation of the city, Russian troops began to shell it regularly, which caused numerous casualties among the population, the destruction of houses and infrastructure.

One of the first Pixelated Realities expeditions to Kherson was held in the de-occupied city during the constant shelling of the historic center.
