The Northern Gate in Kherson

The Northern Gate in Kherson

The Northern Gate in Kherson, another name Moscow Gate, sometimes Petersburg Gate, is part of Kherson’s defensive fortifications, built in 1783, five years after the so-called founding of the city by Katherine II, as part of the Kherson Fortress complex. At the time of the arrival of russia in the steppes of Ukraine in the middle of the 18th century, Ukrainians and representatives of other nations had been living in the South for centuries. Cossack settlements scattered across the steppe reached the shores of the Black and Azov seas. On the site of Kherson, back in the 1730s, the Zaporozhian cossacks founded Oleksandriv Chans, the center of the Ingul palanka.

An architectural monument of national importance with security number 719 in its entirety. The gate is identical to the Ochakiv Gate. Photographed: the outer part of the gate.

On November 11, 2022, after 256 days of Russian occupation, the city was liberated. The expedition was carried out after the de-occupation of Kherson. Due to the proximity of the historical part of the city to the Russian positions on the other side of the Dnieper, during the filming there was a constant threat of shelling from MLRS. Each building in Kherson was filmed for 20-30 minutes, after which the operator and crew changed locations. Filming was done with a drone and handheld camera.
